Bring the outdoors in: 5 simple ways to turn your flat into a plant paradise

Even if you don’t have a garden there are plenty of way to bring the outdoors in and turn your flat or apartment into a haven of greenery.

Even if you don’t have a garden there are plenty of ways you can enjoy the beauty and wellbeing benefits of nature in your home. Here are some ideas to bring the outdoors in and turn your flat or apartment into a haven of greenery.

1. Embrace indoor plants

Indoor plants are the simplest way to give your flat a sense of nature. Choose varieties that suit the size and style of your rooms and position them where they’ll thrive. If floor or table space is limited, think vertical – use hanging planters, wall mounted pots or shelves to save space and create impact by turning your walls into living art.

Or, why not make a statement with your plants by grouping them in a single corner to create a mini-garden?

2. Plant a mini herb garden

Plant your favourite herbs in a sunny spot on a windowsill or kitchen countertop. Basil, rosemary, mint and thyme can flourish in small pots, adding greenery to your living space – and flavour to your cooking.

3. Make the most of your balcony

Depending on the size of your balcony you can green it up with container plants or dwarf trees, or even grow veg, such as tomatoes, chillies or, peppers in pots.

Hanging planters on your balcony railing will maximise the available space – and if they’re on the outside of the railing they’ll also add to your flat’s kerbside appeal.

4. Go stylish with succulents

There are more than 10,000 varieties of succulent – and they’re popular not just because they’re easy to care for but also because of their striking appearance. Mix different shapes, sizes, colours and textures to create modern, impactful arrangements.

5. Use natural elements in your décor

If indoor gardening really isn’t your thing, you can still create a garden feel in your flat by incorporating natural colours and materials as part of your décor.

For example, a colour palette for your interiors that includes earthy browns, vibrant or calming greens and sky or sea-inspired blues will evoke a sense of the outdoors. Nature-inspired textiles, such as soft furnishings with leaf patterns or plant motifs, jute rugs and bamboo or rattan accessories, can create the same effect.

Living in a flat doesn’t mean sacrificing the joys and wellbeing benefits that come from connecting with nature. There are lots of ways to transform your living space into an oasis of greenery, whether through nurturing and caring for real plants or designing an environment that brings the outdoors in.
